CES 2013: LG Optimus G hands-on preview

LG’s Optimus G is a 4.7-inch quad-core beast of a smartphone, with the same brilliant ZeroGap screen technology as the LG Nexus 4 and some impressive features packed in.

Android Jelly Bean runs like a dream thanks to the 1.5GHz SnapDragon quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM. We saw the latest games running with silky smooth frame rates. Not only did they run perfectly, but they looked fantastic on the 4.7-inch IPS Plus display, which pumps out HD images with gusto. The Optimus G also uses the same ‘ZeroGap’ technology as the Nexus 4, which means the glass panel of the screen is incredibly thin, so it feels like you’re actually touching the desktop. Don’t worry if you think that might make the Optimus G’s display flimsy or fragile, however, as it’s made of the super tough Gorilla Glass 2.

A 13 megapixel rear-facing camera is boosted by an LED flash and you also get a front-facing lens as usual. The glossy body features subtle curves which make it comfortable to clutch, and the Optimus G is a decent size in the palm despite its large screen, thanks to its narrow bezel. Unlike many modern Android phones, you get physical home, back and menu buttons beneath the screen, but they don’t add much bulk.

One of the most impressive features of the Optimus G is its ‘Q-Slide’ video player tool. Say you’re watching a movie and you realise you need to send a text. Normally you’d have to quit out of the film, but now you can hit the Q-Slide button and the video will fade, allowing you to browse the desktop and open other apps.

You can adjust the prominence of the video using a slider in the top corner, and we found it easy to watch the video and mess around texting or emailing at the same time. It’s similar to Samsung’s ability to play video in a window, but this feels more comfortable to use.
