Almost all flagship phones do the same stuff, have almost the same processing prowess, have similar designs and are made from the same materials. So, if they are going to set themselves apart from the herd they have to offer something different – in short, something innovative.
It might be a fingerprint sensor, a heart rate monitor, a unique form factor or a technology that allows the customer to do more. If a vendor comes up with the right innovation that is easy and intuitive to use it can make consumers swoon and sales soar.
A good number of new handsets out this year set pulses racing, but there can always be one winner. Here’s our list of the phones with the most exciting new features this year.
In the past year, modular design has become all the rage. LG did their version with the G5 and then Lenovo stepped up with the utterly gorgeous Moto Z. This is modular design done right. A sliver of a phone with snap-on modules, held together by powerful magnets which increase the phone’s prowess battery-wise, with a Hasselblad True Zoom camera module, even Kate Spade designed battery cases… The result is not just aesthetic but also obvious within because it is usually that tiny detail that elevates an okay flagship into a powerhouse and that is what the Moto Z is… a powerhouse device capable of shedding and taking on mods to fit in with the demand of the consumer. This is a true champion.
Sony Xperia XZ
With one of the best IPS displays available on smartphones right now, the XZ reproduces more than 99 percent of the full RGB colour gamut. Sony’s famed Bravia TV technology means that they know more than a thing (or two!) about displays and have the best R&D in-house. So, the fact that their Triluminous Display for Mobile is as ace is probably down to that. The tech basically mashes together Live Colour LED and Live Colour Creation™ for an intensely vivid colour palette, guaranteeing a neither too warm nor too cold viewing experience for the consumer that is just perfect!
They claim to be reinventing smartphone photography and you have to give it to them for their chutzpah in making the claim and then following it through… The collaboration with Leica has catapulted Huawei to the top of the Android flagship pecking order and seeing is believing when it comes to the photos taken on the P9. The smarts on there are staggering.
Huawei jumped on the dual lens bandwagon before Apple could and made sure it was a success… If that is not innovation, nothing else can be.
ZTE Axon 7 mini
A petite (by today’s standards!) handset with a larger than life audio quality is how we would describe the Axon 7 Mini. The handset includes a dedicated audio processor from sound chip specialists Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) and its Hi-Fi audio output is a result of collaborations with various audio associations including Golden Ears Conservatory of Music. The phone features dual front-facing stereo speakers which, thanks to Dolby Atmos® sound, lets the phone emit audio quality and volume similar to that of portable speakers.
