It runs on the latest Android OS and comes with a feature-packed camera and 4G LTE connectivity, all for a super-low £125 price tag. The phone also wowed users with its feather-weight form factor and screen resolution. Despite being a new entrant in the market, the Smart ultra 6 did great pulling in all those votes to sit comfortably atop the list in its peer group.

HTC Desire 510

The great form factor that we have come to expect from HTC considerably boosts the appearance of this budget handset. A good processor and a robust battery, as well as the 4G LTE speeds, endeared the handset to the members of our Consumer Club.

Microsoft Lumia 535

Small but mighty and available in a rainbow of colours, this is the lowest priced handset on our shortlist. A wide angle, front-facing camera, interchangeable covers and access to all of the Windows ecosystem makes it a perfect choice from our survey-taking consumers.

Sony Xperia M4 Aqua

A great waterproof handset with Sony’s much-applauded battery that lasts and lasts and lasts, the M4 Aqua found favour with our Consumer Club members because of its incredible screen and waterproof, compact form factor.
