New free map-based service set to take on Google Maps
Yell.com has unveiled its new mobile mapping service. Yell.com mobile maps is a downloadable application that allows its users to locate any address in the UK, plan both pedestrian and driving routes or search for any of the 2.3m businesses available on Yell.com. Not only does the service have the advantage of having the Yell.com brand name supporting it, but the company has also included some useful features.
Firstly, when entering an address, be it a postcode or just a street name, Yell.com maps will give you the option of auto-completing your entry, thus saving you time and effort. Secondly, a cache system, much like you find on a PC will save previous entries that you have searched for, such as your home address, meaning you don't have to type it out in full each time. Once a business or amenity has been located, the service will provide a full address with the option of calling them direct.
Addresses with links to the service can also be sent via text message, though currently the service is only available on 90 different handsets, but is expected to expand to 100 by the end of August. The application is free to download, though data tariffs will apply, from www.yellmobile.com where you will also be able to see if your handset is compatible.
