Cheap rate, internet-based calls via Wi-Fi for Tesco customers
Tesco has launched a mobile VoIP service called TalkWiFi via the Australian VoIP company Freshtel. It allows you to make cheap rate phone calls via the internet using Wi-Fi. Calls to other TalkWiFI customers are free but other calls are dramatically reduced. Calling Australia, for example, costs just 1.5p per minute.
The service is available via contract or pay-as-you-go and can be downloaded to any compatible handset - although only Nokia phones are valid at the moment with others to follow in the near future. Vouchers can also be bought to act as top-ups in addition to direct debit contracts which provides 70 free minutes per call and then 2p per minute from then on. For example, for anytime calls within the UK you would pay £2.95 for a monthly contract, although other contracts are available.
A Tesco spokesperson said: 'With up to 40% of mobile calls being made at either home or in the office where Wi-Fi networks are becoming more prevalent, mobile phone users now have the opportunity to reduce their bills further without compromising on the quality of the calls they are used to.'
