Free calls with Nimbuzz

Service provides users with free calls over VoIP through online communities and social networks

Nimbuzz is a downloadable application that enables mobile users and online communities to make free calls. Once users have registered, all their contacts from their selected IM communities, including Skype, MSN, Google Talk, Yahoo! and AIM are displayed in a single contact list. This list is displayed in such a way that the Nimbuzz users can see which contacts are online and from which online communities they are from.

Consumers of social network sites such as Facebook and MySpace can also make the most of Nimbuzz's ‘Communicator' widget that provides a free chat and text service. Once the Communicator has been downloaded, users can type messages through their social network site that can be instantly sent to their friend's phone or computer. In addition, they can also ‘buzz' friends, alerting them that you want to chat even if they are offline.

Nimbuzz itself is free to download, though data usage rates depend on your network operator. While Nimbuzz's new applications works on more than 90 handsets, currently only Nokia Symbian Series 60 devices can use the application when connected to a 3G or Wi-Fi network (with Windows Mobile devices expected to follow in June). However, for Java-enabled phones or when using a GPRS/EDGE connection, international calls can be made at a local dial-in cost by using Nimbuzz's 'hybrid-VoIP' solution, much in the same way as Skype works.
