BT brings Wi-Fi to the masses

04 October 2007

BT is launching the world's largest Wi-Fi community, designed to deliver broadband to millions of people.

This innovative idea known as BT FON relies on each user agreeing to share a small portion of their home broadband connection by opening up a separate, secure channel on their wireless router. In turn each member will be able to share the connection of any other member, thus building up a Wi-Fi community.

BT hopes that this new scheme will open up Wi-Fi coverage across the UK and the rest of the world. All of BT's Total Broadband customers (estimated to be around three million) will be invited to join the existing community of 500,000 members giving them instant access to more than 190,000 FON hotspots worldwide.
