Want to buy/sell used phones? Try giffgaff's Marketplace

Mobile virtual operator giffgaff today launched Marketplace, offering consumers a platform to sell their phones or to buy used ones at competitive rates.

Marketplace will offer consumers a valuation tool and will let them deal without tying them down to contracts.

giffgaff's Marketplace arrives as yet another competitor in the toughly contested second hand phone market which is presently valued at over £1.2  billion in UK alone. There are various players in the market like Mazuma mobile, EE Rewards and Recycle, Envirofone and O2 Recycle which help phone users dispose of their used devices but Marketplace will also let consumers look for used devices as well at competitive rates.

Marketplace commits to rigorously test pre-owned phones before they are offered to buyers at competitive rates. Its valuation tool helps users know how much their used phones are worth and the process will be completed quickly with sellers getting paid on the next working day. Sellers will also be able to get back their devices from giffgaff if they feel they didn't get the right quote on Marketplace.

Launching today, Marketplace will allow users to leave the network anytime they want and will also allow them to purchase goodybags with their pre-owned phones. Buyers will receive their devices unlocked and will not be asked to enter into contracts with giffgaff.

“The pre-owned phone market is worth nearly £1.2B** in the UK. With Marketplace, giffgaff will help offer quality control to these phones by giving peace of mind to members that the phones they are buying are in excellent working order. By giving people a no-nonsense platform to help sell their phone we are also giving them an opportunity to recoup some money from their old devices. At giffgaff we are uniquely placed to offer members this value as the market pioneers of unlocked smartphones,” said Kim Faura, Chief Commercial Officer at giffgaff.

A little over three years ago, giffgaff started selling a range of phones on Pay As You Go, on contracts with networks other than itself as well as through finance.
