The last iPhone to arrive in white was launched four years ago but encouraging sales of follow-on handsets shows that those models weren't sorely missed by users. However, if Apple were to launch another white iPhone now, surely a lot of consumers would want to get their hands around them to see for themselves how it looks and feels like. The just-launched Jet Black iPhone 7 has drawn quite a following of late and if an equally sparkly white iPhone were to be made available, it may perform equally well.
The last white iPhone
The smartphone market has stagnated over the past 12 months and even though Apple launched the iPhone 7 in new colours and with new capabilities, the company isn't likely to sell any more than 40 to 50 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2017. The fact that Apple sold just over 50 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2016 may mean that the iPhone 7 may alarmingly not match up to the iPhone 6s in terms of sales. To curb the gap, Macotakara, a Japanese news site for the latest news on iPhones and the iOS ecosystem, says that Apple is planning a "Pure White model to iPhone 7,iPhone 7 Plus" to shore up sales.
Macotakara has published an image render of a Pure White iPhone 7 Plus which looks quite as shiny as the Jet Black one. If Apple does launch it, it may do well during the holiday shopping season but the fact that the Jet Black model is prone to picking up scratches and prints quite easily, a lot of users may be wary about buying an expensive handset which could get damaged easily, especially a pure white one.
Macotakara states that the information may be unreliable which means either the 'Pure White iPhone' idea is still in the pipeline or it could be just an unverified rumour flying around and vying for attention. While the idea does excite us, we will look around for more on this elsewhere and as soon as we know more about the new model, we'll let you know.
