The Gear S3 is available to pre-order from the Samsung website in two variants- the Gear S3 frontier and the Gear S3 classic, both of which are currently priced at £349. Even though the capabilities of the Gear S2 may boost sales of the new wearable, Samsung is still offering freebies to those who pre-order it first in the UK. If you're among the first 1,000 customers to pre-order the Gear S3 smartwatch, which means between now and the next 24 hours if you're lucky, then you'll win Level Active headphones for free. As of now, both variants are out of stock on Samsung's website so you may want to try again in the morning.
Android Wear 2.0: All you need to know
Specifications-wise, the Gear S3 comes with a 1.3" Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels, a thickness of 12.9mm, Tizen OS 2.3.2 operating system, internal storage of 4GB, a 768MB RAM, a 380 mAh Lithium Ion battery with wireless charging capability, NFC capability, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, a dual-core 1.0 GHz processor and sensors like an accelerometer, a gyrometer, a Barometer, a heart rate monitor and an Ambient light sensor.
The 'frontier' variant is ideal for travellers, adventurers and explorers who would want to sport a rugged smartwatch while trekking, hiking or simply swimming. Not only does it look 'rugged', it also features an IP68 water proof rating and its glass display is sheathed by Gorilla® Glass SR+, a glass specially designed to protect wearable displays from external conditions.
The 'classic' variant looks more sleek and formal but does come with the same rugged features as the frontier variant. Samsung seems to have invested a lot of attention towards marketing the classic variant as any other luxury watch, just like how the Apple Watch was seen by many as a luxury product rather than a mere smartwatch. "The large watch face was inspired by styles emerging from the world’s most premium watch brands. A classic timepiece combined with the latest innovations in technology, the Gear S3 is bound to withstand the test of time,” said Yvan Arpa, a Swiss luxury watch designer who helped design the Gear S3.
Smartwatch sales hit by Apple Watch release delays
Just like premium Samsung smartphones, the Gear S3 features a Super AMOLED display whose 'Always On' feature will show you the time as long as the watch is switched on, letting you use it as a traditional watch when you're not using its smart features. The rotating bezel will also let you accept or reject calls or snooze an alarm without touching the screen which is a new addition to the Gear S line.
Several more new features in the Gear S3 include the ability of the watch to convert your drawings into Emojis, the new Reminders app which lets you manage your schedule, the ability to make contactless payments via Samsung Pay, the new SOS and location tracking capabilities to alert near and dear ones when you're lost and a range of new apps with independent functionality. You will also be able to download select apps and watch faces directly from the Gear S3 without having to download them on your smartphone first.
