Coming soon: WhatsApp apps for PCs and Macs

Even though smartphones are usually considered as true multifunctional devices, those working in corporate desks would know that they can be very distracting when such users are working on their presentations or excel sheets in their desktops.

A messaging platform like WhatsApp, which lets you chat with friends, large groups and even companies, can usually cause intense distraction. So when it was discovered that WhatsApp was working on developing apps purely for Macs and Windows desktops, such users may have breathed a sigh of relief.

WABetaInfo leaked a few images on Twitter yesterday which showed download pages dedicated to “Download for Mac OS X” and “Download for Windows.” The Twitter account is known for posting updates on WhatsApp builds, and what we can imply from the screenshots is that WhatsApp may soon be available for Windows and Mac OS X users. While existing WhatsApp users can use the platform on their desktops by scanning QR Codes on their smartphones, such users may be able to download the app, log in and use the app directly on their desktops in future.

As of now, the web version of WhatsApp not only allows users to change their profile pictures, but also lets them change their profile statuses. For those who would prefer their desktops to chat and upload images on WhatsApp, the existing features offer them a great start and with WhatsApp reportedly working on dedicated apps for desktops, the experience will surely improve in the coming days.

Last month, WhatsApp introduced several new features in its iOS and Android apps like enabling users to share documents up to 100MB, share photos that are stored in cloud-based services like Dropbox, OneDrive and Google Drive, the ability to change background colours and to zoom in videos. If these features are introduced in the desktop-only apps in the future, WhatsApp's popularity might match that of Yahoo Messenger whose popularity among desktop users skyrocketed a decade ago before Google Talk ruined the honeymoon.
