RIP FM radio: LG Stylus 2 with DAB+ is here

LG has unveiled Stylus 2, the world's first smartphone with DAB+ radio which offers access to more radio channels than traditional FM and doesn't consume any data in the process!

LG Stylus 2 was launched today at Radiodays Europe 2016 in Paris. The best part about the phone is that you won't have to depend on FM Radio anymore, apart from operating a fairly capable phone using a new stylus.

Thanks to DAB+ technology, Stylus 2 will come with a DAB+ chip as well as an app to let you browse through digital radio broadcasts and get to access a lot more radio channels than traditional FM will let you to. There's also an interface which will allow broadcasters to create their own apps to offer their services. However, we aren't sure if they will until more and more new smartphones start featuring DAB+ in the coming months.

The inclusion of DAB+ in Stylus 2 was made possible thanks to a collaboration between LG and International DMB Advancement Group (IDAG). As per LG, DAB+ already reaches over 500 million people in 40 countries and will eventually replace FM analog radio around the world.

“We are taking a proactive approach towards the fast-paced technological shift to digital broadcasting with DAB+ to deliver a new paradigm of experiences through the smartphone," said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

B&O Play will power high quality audio in upcoming LG G5

LG Stylus was initially expected to launch at Mobile World Congress along with the G5, but LG has chosen to launch the phone at the world's largest radio forum to signify the entry of DAB+ in smartphones.

Stylus 2 is a direct upgrade to the G4 Stylus that was unveiled in May of last year. It retains the size of G4 Stylus but comes with a new nano-coated pen for greater accuracy than the one which came with its predecessor. Other upgrades include an upgraded front camera, the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS and twice the internal storage and RAM. LG has chosen to retain the processor, the rear camera and the battery and has decided not to launch a 3G variant unlike with the G4 Stylus.

Stylus 2 also comes with a Pen Keeper feature which will alert you through a pop up message if the phone is in motion with an empty Stylus bay. This will ensure that you do not lose or misplace the stylus while travelling. The phone will be available in Titan, White and Brown colours.
