BlackBerry to launch two Android phones this year, says CEO

BlackBerry CEO John Chen has hinted that the Canadian company may launch two new Android phones in 2016, but that the possibilities rest on the success of the recently-launched Android-powered Priv.

While we had a sneak peek at a new BlackBerry phone code-named 'Vienna' back in November, the news of yet another Android phone being in the cards puts to rest all assumptions that BlackBerry may close down its mobile phone division, even though such assumptions came from the CEO himself!

Priv could be the last Blackberry phone, unless you buy it!

"Depends on the Priv. If the Priv is well received in the market and looks like it is. There's a good chance [...], we will still focus on the high-end probably closer to mid-range coming out in 2016," said Chen in an interview with the Bloomberg last month.

BlackBerry's 'Vienna' Android phone leaked

Speaking to CNET yesterday, he was asked about future BlackBerry phones running on Android and said, "so far, so good. I'm taking a cautiously optimistic view."

BlackBerry bet big on Android when it launched the Priv last year. The Priv is one-of-a-kind phone that offers an Android OS secured by Blackberry 10 Enterprise. In terms of software, Priv contains stock Android architecture and offers quick launch access to emails, Blackberry Messenger and messages. You can also access Google Now, BlackBerry Hub and BlackBerry Universal search options from the home screen.

As far as leaks suggest, BlackBerry is going ahead with a new Android phone called 'Vienna' which, like the Priv, has a physical keyboard but not a slide-out one. Despite this, the phone still features a 5-inch display and looks rather tall for one's pocket.
