Leaked! Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) specs, upgrades and pricing

Samsung may soon launch a new version of its Galaxy J1 budget smartphone if a recent rumour is to be believed. Priced at £79.99, the original Galaxy J1 was launched earlier this year and a couple of peeks of its upcoming successor reveals a larger display, larger storage and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop to boot.

With budget smartphones turning into capable multi-taskers with the passage of time, the Galaxy J1 was a disappointment. The phone featured a 4GB storage, a 4.3-inch display, 512MB of RAM and 5MP and 2MP cameras which paled in comparison when compared with fellow sub-£100 smartphones. However, rumours about the upcoming version of J1 offer a glimmer of hope.

Vietnamese website SCCN has revealed a couple of images of the new phone which has been named J1 (2016). The report reveals that the new version will sport a 4.5-inch display compared to the 4.3-inch one of its predecessor, albeit with the same resolution of 480 x 800p. The phone will also pack an 8GB storage as against the miniscule 4GB that the existing J1 holds.

Featuring Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system, J1 (2016) will also feature a quad core Exynos 3457 processor which will churn up 1.3GHz of power and will be boosted by a Mali-720 GPU. The phone's performance will also be better with a 1GB RAM along with dual-SIM support. However, the leak did not mention if the phone will carry a microSD slot for additional storage.

Samsung will also continue the 5MP and 2MP cameras in the new phone which will carry the same features as the ones in the existing Galaxy J1 do.

Earlier this month, T-Mobile Poland revealed a timeline for major smartphone releases in the first two quarters of next year that included the likes of Sony, HTC, Samsung, Microsoft and LG. As per the operator, Samsung will release two new Galaxy phones in the first quarter, followed by two more Galaxy phones in the second quarter.  Given that the two phones to be launched in the first quarter would certainly be the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge phones, the upcoming Galaxy J1 (2016) may see the light of the day in the second quarter of 2016.

If J1 (2016) launches at the same price that the existing J1 is selling for, it may turn out to be among the best sub-£100 smartphones to be launched in 2016. At the moment, Three UK is selling J1 for £79.99 on Pay As You Go and on a range of Pay Monthly offers. On Pay Monthly, you can pick up a Galaxy J1 for as low as £10 a month with no upfront cost. This deal includes unlimited texts, 500MB of data and 100 minutes of talk time.
