The most popular music, apps, games, movies and TV shows of 2015 on iTunes

We are nearing the end of 2015 and like in the last eight years since Apple launched the first iPhone, the Cupertino giant is yet again ripping up records to dominate the world of smartphones and the music, apps and features that come with them.

Here's a list of the most popular music, apps, games, movies and TV shows on Apple's store that received either the best reviews or topped the world in terms of downloads.

Apps

In an era where smartphones are increasingly threatening digicams and conventional cameras in terms of picture quality, zooming ability and editing tools, it's no surprise that the iTunes app of the year has been awarded to a photo app.

Enlight, a photo app created by Lightricks Ltd., lets you enhance, tweak and decorate your photos in an easy to use interface by adding your own fillers and effects. With this app, you can reproduce the quality of vintage films in your photos and can even opt for two-tone gradients. The app's best editing tools include creating amazing painterly effects, converting any image to unique street art, overlaying two photos to produce a double exposure effect and a state of the art noise reduction tool.

Among the top paid iPhone apps are Minecraft: Pocket Edition, Heads Up!, TripView, Facetune and Afterlight. The best free apps are Messenger, Dubsmash, Uber, WhatsApp Messenger and Spotify Music.

Music

Apple has launched its Music app this year and it is thus certain that the rivalry for the best music categories on iTunes has been fiercer than ever.

Drake carried on his blistering form to be named the Artist of the Year, while Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and featuring Bruno Mars won the best song of the year, beating Cheerleader by Omi and See You Again by Wiz Khalifa in the process. Courtney Barnett, an Australian artist, has been named as the Best New Artist of the year.

In terms of the best albums produced this year, 25 by Adele, despite its late launch, topped the charts and was  following by 1989 by Taylor Swift and x by Ed Sheeran. Justin Bieber's Purpose finished fourth.

Movies

Mad Max: Fury Road turned out to be the Blockbuster of the Year while Ex Machina, Inside Out and Amy walked away with the best Sci-Fi, Family Film and Documentary awards respectively.

Inside Out also led the top sellers category, followed by Kingsman: The Secret Service and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1. Fifty Shades of Grey turned up in the sixth position in the best selling category.

TV Shows

This was a tricky category given that TV shows have been oozing class and rivalling the popularity of big-budget movies of late. Amy Schumer prevailed as the Best Comedy show while Olive Kitteridge, Mad Men and Better Call Saul, all extremely popular, took away the top honours in the Best Mini Series, FInal Season and New Series categories.

Not too surprisingly, Game of Thrones emerged as the best selling TV show of the Year followed by Suits and The Walking Dead. Grey's Anatomy and Homeland finished seventh and ninth respectively in terms of sales.

Games

Gaming apps turned out to be the top grossing apps of 2015, selling more than apps belonging to any other category. The top five highest grossing apps of 2015 are Clash of Clans, Game of War- Fire Age, Candy Crush Saga, Heart of Vegas and Slotomania Casino- Las Vegas Free Slot Machine Games – Bet, Spin & Win.
