Microsoft launches Lumia 550, its first Windows 10 budget phone!

Microsoft has kept its promise by launching the Lumia 550 in Europe, thus completing its triad of brand new Lumia phones aimed at premium, mid-range and budget phone segments.

Earlier, CEO Satya Nadella had promised that whether you are a low-range, mid-range or premium phone buyer, Microsoft will have a phone for you that'll rival similarly-ranged products but also will be the fruit of investments that would have otherwise been distributed to several phones within the same price range.

Why Lumia 550?

Having launched Lumia 950XL and Lumia 950 phones for premium and mid-range buyers, Microsoft is now targeting budget buyers with the Lumia 550 costing just £92. The phone runs Windows 10 and will run all essential features like Cortana, OneDrive and Office.

In terms of specifications, Lumia 550 has a 4.7-inch display, similar to that of iPhone 6s but with a Full HD display and a resolution of 1280×720p. Its engine will run on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 chip which will churn up 1.1 GHz of power. Other features include 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a 2,100 mAh battery, 5MP and 2MP cameras and 4G connectivity.

On its own, the Lumia 550 may not be of much use in terms of performance or camera quality, but the presence of OneDrive makes it a key Windows 10 device. Through OneDrive, you will be able to work on files in any Windows 10 device and save it anywhere at any time for later use. This inter-operability is complimented by the fact that the phone can also hold up to 200 GB of extra storage through its microSD slot.

Who is the Lumia 550 for?

Despite not being as cheap as Lumia 435 or Lumia 532, Lumia 550 will be a great device for those who are looking forward to purchasing a sub-£100 phone. The launch comes at a time when rumours are flying around on Microsoft planning to launch its first Surface phone come March.

Once you start using the Lumia 550, you will be able to create and edit files like Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and will also be able to make Skype calls. Outlook mail and calendar will also be very helpful if you use Outlook at work and need to sync your phone with it.
