If you think your home Wi-Fi isn't fast enough for your download needs, don't despair. Li-Fi, a new internet connection currently under development, will soon let you download, browse and upload data as much as 100 times faster than your home broadband. If this isn't a revolution, then what is?
Li-Fi is a project currently under testing and development by Velmenni, an Estonian start-up. The firm is using a concept knows as Visible Light Communication which is currently in use in DVD trays and can transmit data using extremely fast LED lights that are adjacent to or facing each other. While this means you won't be able to use it beyond walls, the firm is aware of it and is working out a way to plug that gap.

“We are doing a few pilot projects within different industries where we can utilise the VLC (visible light communication) technology. Currently we have designed a smart lighting solution for an industrial environment where the data communication is done through light. We are also doing a pilot project with a private client where we are setting up a Li-Fi network to access the internet in their office space,” so says Deepak Solanki, CEO of Velmenni.

Velmenni is working on a generation of smart LED bulbs named Jugnu which will eventually be used for the purpose.

"Jugnu is the next generation of smart LED bulbs that can transfer data through visible light. We are implementing the Li-Fi technology in our new range of LED bulbs. It refers to the wireless communication system which uses light as a medium of transport instead of traditional radio frequencies. Although the use of light in order to transmit data can be limited in comparison to radio waves, there is a great amount of possibilities that can be developed with the proper use of this technology," says the company in its website.
Li-Fi as a concept was first coined by Professor Harald Haas from the University of Edinburgh in 2011 who then said, “All we need to do is fit a small microchip to every potential illumination device and this would then combine two basic functionalities: illumination and wireless data transmission. In the future we will not only have 14 billion light bulbs, we may have 14 billion Li-Fis deployed worldwide for a cleaner, greener and even brighter future."
