Canalys, an independent analyst company has pegged the total number of Apple watches sold in the last six months at 7 million units. That's more than the total number of smartwatches sold by all other companies in the last one year!
Even in the third quarter, Apple Watch sales numbered 300,000 units which was more than 200,000 units sold by Pebble despite the launch of the latter's popular Time Steel watch. However, a Canalys analyst says that Apple Watch sales during Christmas will be carefully watched by many as a measure of how successful the smartwatch market is.
"After experiencing significant supply chain constraints early on, Apple managed to overcome its production struggles with the Apple Watch and is building momentum going into Q4. Shipments are steadily increasing as it has greatly expanded the Watch’s channel footprint internationally," said Daniel Matte of Canalys.
The continued success of Apple Watch owes itself to Apple introducing the device to more and more countries on a regular basis. Similarly important has been availability of a large market of watch cases, straps and covers which offer hundreds of new looks to the Watch.
In September, Apple added several new models to its existing Watch line. The cheap yet good-looking Apple Watch Sport was made available in brand new colours- Gold, Rose Gold and anodised finishes. Apple also started selling new watches with leather straps for the first time.

Apple also launched WatchOS 2 in the same month, bringing in new features like new watch faces, notifications from third party apps, ability to take dictation, greater use of emoji, Digital Touch for drawing and sketching and replying to texts with audio messages.

Compatible with iOS 9, WatchOS 2 also lets you activate heart rate monitor, video player and microphone directly on the Watch and not through an iPhone. It also made Siri more capable, helping you with starting new workouts, checking Glances, getting transit information and looking up words on the dictionary.
Luxury variants of Apple Watch unveiled by third party retailers
"watchOS 2 has brought native apps to the platform, and new colors and styles have refreshed the line-up, but Apple needs to continue to generate demand six months after launch," said Chris Jones, Vice president and principal analyst at Canalys.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple Watch 2, which is expected to arrive in April next year, will bring in several new features like a video camera for FaceTime conversations, Wi-Fi connectivity as well as new premium models to cater to luxury buffs.

Being able to connect to Wi-Fi through new wireless chipsets will make the Watch largely independent from iPhones. Apple is also said to be planning several new models that would range between $1000 and $10,000 price tags. This would ensure people with a liking for luxury watches won't have to pay too high a price for the Apple Watch 2. The new models could be given various names like Titanium, Platinum, Tungsten or Palladium.
