Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch review

At the iconic Tempodrome in Berlin today, Samsung showed off their latest smartwatch amidst much music, light show and cheering.

The Gear S2, to be available starting October comes in two flavours: classic, for those who dont want to be seen with a silicone strap watch at meetings and the sporty version for the health nut or those who should be health nuts.

Look and feel

The Gear S2 that we spent time with was the sports edition, and came in a choice of colours for the silicone band. The body of the watch is a matt silver and the bezel on the watch has an angled mirror finish to it.

The watch is extremely light-weight and the stainless steel back is nano-coated to prevent water damage.

Also, with an IP68 rating, the watch can be worn when out running in crazy British weather as well as in the shower.

There are no crowns but two buttons on the side to wake the watch up and perform basic functions. The screen is super bright and measures 1.2-inchs in diameter with a 360 x 360 resolution (302 ppi).

Screen and bezel

The proof of Samsung's watch pudding hinges on the bezel. As we were told during the presentation, itty bitty crowns are a thing of the past and a rotating bezel is not just super intuitive but also something the body is bound to remember as a function.

This does not render th screen unresponsive, you can stil scroll through and use it to select apps or functions, the bezel just brings another option into the game.

Wake the screen up by pressing one of the buttons on the side and then rotate the bezel to run through the settings and apps drawer. To select one, tap the screen and then go back to rotating the bezel to fine-tune your choice.

Killer features

The Gear S2 can be used to summon Uber taxis, check out Yelp reviews as well as read the news on the CNN app. The watch also has Nike+ connectivity so you can join your pals on Nike's social platform.

Battery

Samsung promise that the watch will go two days with a single charge which is via a fast-charging docking station and only time will tell if it will. In its defence, it does have ambient light sensor and a power saving mode which should help delay a juice up.

Connectivity

Bluetooth and wifi enabled, the Gear S2 also comes with a 3G SIM card which is built in. However, this is just one version of it. Samsung have used their own Tizen platform for it and we would love to see how it performs.

Early Verdict

The Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch enters an arena already heaving with smartwear of all types, there is LG's luxe version of the Watch Urbane, Motorola's Moto 360 (2015) as well as more bespoke products like the ones from TomTom and Garmin.

However, they have brand loyalty and the Gear S2 looks to be a really good product after Apple's crash and burn with the Watch.

The specs on the Gear S2 are solid and we will know more once we have had one for longer. Stay tuned for our in-depth review soon!
