Hacked! Carphone Warehouse security breach compromises users’ private data

Carphone Warehouse was at the receiving end of sophisticated cyber-attacks recently which seem to have ripped open the mobile retainer's websites as well as credit card details of its customers.

If you are one such customer, there is a chance your name, address, date of birth, credit card details as well as your email ID have been compromised, even though the retailer did not suffer attacks in all its divisions.

The Information Commissioner's Office is aware of the incident.

Hackers attacked a division that took care of websites like OneStopPhoneShop.com, e2save.com and Mobiles.co.uk and worked with customers of iD Mobile, TalkTalk Mobile, Talk Mobile and Carphone Warehouse.

Even though the attack had been contained, the extent of damage is still not known in detail. Carphone Warehouse even waited a while before disclosing the incident to customers who are not really happy about it now.

While closing down your Carphone Warehouse account isn't really a good idea, you can take a few clever steps to ensure that anyone who has access to your private information will not be able to do much with it.

Some little tasks like letting the police know, informing your bank and credit card company, being wary of unsolicited calls asking for information and changing online account passwords come to mind.

The news comes at a time when hackers are increasingly targeting loopholes within mobile operating systems to collect private data of users. While fixes are never far away, how frequently these attacks occur is frustrating for many.
