Is switching networks proving impossible? Ofcom has a solution

Switching between mobile networks has never been easy. Most often you could get forced to answer why, or to put it straight, how dare you.

To ease your woes, Ofcom is coming up with new solutions that could make switching between networks the easiest thing you could ever do.

Current processes only allow you to plead with your current operator for Porting Authorization Codes to help with switching to another service while keeping the same number. They basically put the onus on your operator to take its own sweet time to facilitate the transition and make the process difficult for you.

No wonder, switching rates for mobile services plummeted from 9 per cent to a measly 6 per cent between 2013 and 2014.

Ofcom's new process, though yet to be implemented, favours  'gaining provider led' switching, which means that you will only need to contact the operator whose services you wish to switch to, and it will do the rest of the paperwork with little fuss.

This will also save you the time and effort of contacting your own provider in case you need to keep your number. If you are not on a monthly contract, you just need to terminate one service and work on a new contract with another one.

Ofcom says its new measures should help you make well-informed choices while switching between networks and also to ensure the process is as easy as it gets.
