Heathrow airport offers generally faster upload and download speeds on mobile internet with EE emerging as the best mobile internet provider in both airports, says a recent study by mobile analytics firm Rootmetrics.
Based on hundreds of scientific, independent and consumer-focused tests in both airports, Rootmetrics gathered comparative data on download speeds and upload speeds offered by major mobile network operators EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three.
At Heathrow, EE emerged as the best provider, offering up to 31.2 Mbps of download speed with O2 lagging far behind at 4.2 Mbps with Vodafone and Three bringing up the rear. In terms of upload speeds, EE was again at the top with O2, Vodafone and Three trailing far behind.
At Gatwick, the average download and upload speeds were much lower compared to those at Heathrow with the exception of O2 whose relative upload speeds were almost similar in both airports. However, EE outperformed the other operators here as well with median download and upload speeds of 20.4 Mbps and 17.9 Mbps respectively. The next highest upload speed was achieved by O2 and Three which offered a mere 1.6 Mbps. In terms of download speed, Vodafone registered a second place with a median speed of 5.7 Mbps.
As per Rootmetrics, an average EE customer at Heathrow can stream an HD movie with only a 5 second buffer, stream music with almost no buffer and download a game in less than five seconds. Having an EE contract can be beneficial for corporate flyers as well who need to download and upload heavy files in quick time before catching their flights.
