MWC15: Microsoft launches Lumia 640 and 640 XL smartphones

Microsoft today continued the 'big brother-small brother' launch started by Apple with the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus in late September and followed by Samsung yesterday with the launch of the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge.

The new 5 inch Lumia 640 and the 5.7 inch Lumia 640 XL were announced today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Both the devices will run the Windows 8.1 operating system until Windows 10 is launched before the end of the year.

The 1.2 GHz Snapdragon quad-core processor will power both devices and the 1GB memory will allow users to access important documents and run websites, apps and games smoothly. A decent 2500 mAh battery in the Lumia 640 and 3000mAh in the 640 XL will ensure faster performance and longer life under heavy usage.


The 8MP rear camera in the Lumia 640 is designed to capture detailed photos in low-light conditions, and the 13MP ZEISS optics camera in the Lumia 640 XL also features LED flash and can be operated through the Lumia Camera Software.

All dual SIM variants of the Lumia 640 and the Lumia 640 XL with have LTE support as well as Smart Dual SIM to ensure users do not miss calls anymore. Users will also ecieve a free one year subscription to Office 365 which will feature Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote in the phones along with 1TB worth OneDrive storage.

The Lumia 640, to be priced at £90 for the 3G variant and £100 for the LTE variant, will start selling from March in glossy cyan, orange, white and matte black. the Lumia 640 XL, priced at £120 for the 3G variant and £140 for the LTE variant, will start selling from April in matte cyan, orange and black and both matte and glossy white colours.
