In a somewhat surprising yet welcome move, Apple has entered into a partnership with Pinterest that will allow iOS users to download apps directly from the Pinterest mobile ap, named 'App Pins.'
Till now, the Apple Store used to be the sole destination for app purchases from iOS devices. Pinterest believes the move will make it easier for iOS users to search and find new apps without having to visit the App Store.
'App Pins' is based on the same format that Pinterest uses for photos, recipes and other websites. This will allow Apple users to pin their apps on Pinterest. However, Android users will have to wait to search and pin apps on Pinterest.
With over 70 million users, 75 percent of whom are mobile users, Pinterest seems like a good deal for Apple. Being able to pin a large number of apps, users will be able to download far more applications than they could from the App Store.
Evan Sharp, founder of Pinterest, said, “We can be a really powerful service for app discovery, which is a problem that still really hasn’t been solved,Our specialty is really connecting people to the things they want to do.”
On Thursday, Apple will launch a new App Store account featuring multiple boards on Pinterest. Post launch, Apple's in-house team will pin several apps that it wants to promote and also add apps from guest pinners.
This comes as great news for iOS users, especially those who love searching and downloading apps based on their needs and likings.
We would, however, keep our ears pinned for a similar partnership with Android soon.
