Having purchased Nokia's rolling stock and invariably ramming it's head against the iOS 8 and Android 5.0 Lollipop ecosystems, Microsoft is adding several updates to its Windows 8.1 operating system with a view to keep its head above the water.
The series of new updates will also feature Microsoft's new Lumia Denim update that brings in several new features exclusively for Lumia smartphones.
Having parried around the final release date since the launch of the Lumia Denim update, Microsoft has finally confirmed that the update is now available for the Lumia family. Also being introduced is the new Cortana, Microsoft's home grown voice-based virtual assistant that'll enable setting reminders, toggle through apps and more.
Cortana isn't accent-conscious, and can understand virtually every word that comes out of the mouth. It'll be available for the Lumia series in the United States, China, Australia, Canada India, France, Italy, Germany and Spain.
The Lumia Denim's goody bag also packs a new voice activation feature, one that wakes up Cortana simply by saying Hey!
Thanks to the Denim update, users will also be able to stack their apps in folders, thus making the Windows Live Tile interface easier to use. Lumia smartphones will also be able to pack the new Glance screen- a multifunctional screen showing notifications, times and calendar appointments even in a locked status. New additions include fitness and health stats from MSN Health and Fitness app and Bing Weather updates.
We won't say this is something unique as far as screen notifications are concerned in iOS and Android. However, we'll wait for Mobile World Congress to know if users think Lumias are the best devices they could ever own.
