Samsung have finally taken a definitive step towards putting their weight behind the product by announcing that from 2015 onwards, all their smart TVs will be powered by Tizen, their home-grown operating system.
Smart TVs have grown in popularity with the rise in streaming entertainment sites like Netflix and Now TV.
However, Samsung have yet to release any products that make use of the OS relying instead on Android. “We are focusing our efforts on Tizen right now," Kim Hyun-suk, president of visual display business, Samsung told Reuters. "We hope that other TV makers will also use it and help build an ecosystem that will help the platform grow.”
Tizen has, in the past, been seen on just one of the phones from Samsung’s stable of products plus some smartwatches and a smattering of cameras.
Is this Samsung’s small yet sure step away from Android? Only time will tell…
