Apple is preparing to launch a 12.9-inch version of the iPad, dubbed the Pro, at the start of 2015.
The tablet will be much larger than any iPad which has gone before - the mini is 7.9 inches and the iPad Air is 9.7 - and closer in size to Apple’s laptop range, with models of the MacBook Air measuring 11.6in and 13.3in.
Bloomberg, citing “people familiar with the matter” claims the iPad Pro will arrive in the first quarter of 2015, meaning some team between early January and late March. Although it has shifted recent new product launches to later in the year, Apple was previously known for announcing new product categories in January, with the original iPhone a notable example.
It is well known that Apple is also working on larger models of iPhone, with the iPhone 6 expected to arrive next month with screen sizes of 4.7 and 5.5 inches, although the latter may have been delayed until the end of 2014.
Arch rival Samsung produces a range of tablets with 12.2-inch screens, including the Galaxy Note 12.2 and Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2.
A larger iPad has been rumoured for about a year now, and historically Bloomberg has a very good record for delivering accurate reports from Apple insiders.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 6 is expected to arrive at a media event on 9 September.
