Samsung has announced the Galaxy S5 Mini, a pint-sized smartphone with a 4.5-inch display and a design all but identical to its bigger brother.
Just like the regular S5, which is half an inch larger, the S5 Mini is dust and water resistant, and features a fingerprint scanner on its Home button for enhanced security, and a heart rate monitor on the back to keep track of your health and fitness with the included S Health application.

That monitor sits below an 8-megapixel camera and LED flash, which is joined by a 2.1-megapixel camera on the front capable of shooting full HD video.
There’s an Ultra Power Saving mode to get the most out of the phone’s battery - just like the full size S5 - and the Mini’s design is almost identical to the larger model. This means a plastic body with chrome edges, a glass front and a soft-touch back with a dimpled pattern stamped into it.
Samsung is offering the S5 Mini in the same colours as the S5, which means Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and Copper Gold
There’s 16GB of storage, plus a microSD card which accepts cards of up to 64GB, and the phone is compatible with all of the UK’s 4G networks.

Inside, you’ll find power coming from a quad-core 1.4GHz processor with 1.5GB of RAM; the S5 Mini’s software is also the same as the bigger S5 - this means Android 4.4 KitKat and Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface.
The Galaxy S5 Mini will go on sale in Russia first, arriving there in early July, before launching in global markets later. Samsung says it will announce a UK launch date and price in due course.
