Baby monitor feature discovered in Samsung Galaxy S5

No mention of it at launch, but the Samsung Galaxy S5 happens to be packing a feature that just might make it a must-buy for new parents.

That feature is a baby monitor. The SoyaCincau site has found a 'baby crying detector' mode hidden away in list of features for Samsung's upcoming smartphone, but it's not quite as straightforward as it might initially sound.

First up, the feature relies on you leaving your smartphone near to your baby. If you do and the baby starts crying, the S5 sends a vibrating alert to your Gear smartwatch to make you aware. Ah, so you've spotted the flaw here.

Yes, you need a matching Samsung watch to make this work, not to mention the ability to leave your phone alone and in the baby's bedroom. With all of that in mind, you might be better off just going out and buying some kind of baby monitoring kit. Although if you have the watch and need time away from staring at the small screen, it just might be worth trying.

Samsung does, of course, throw in a long legal disclaimer, essentially saying this is no substitute for good parenting. It's not a babysitter, in other words, just an extra pair of ears if you are elsewhere in the house. But you, as sensible people, probably know that anyway.
