LG creates the smartphone-friendly Smart Lamp

The wackiest idea of the week is already with us on Monday morning – the LG Smart Lamp.

It isn't actually a lamp, it's a bulb. One that is powered by your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Hook it up and the 10w LED bulb can be controlled using an Android or iOS device for the level of illumination you require. But that's not all.

There's also a light-based alarm function, not to mention a security mode that gives the impression that you are at home. If that's not enough, the bulb can flash when you have an incoming call or even, if you happen to be having a party, it can pulse to the beat of the music (although that's limited to Android right now).

Talking of limited, the bulb is only available in LG's native Korea right now, although at the equivalent of just under £20, it isn't madly expensive in light of (sorry) all the fun you can have with it. Especially as each bulb lasts an impressive 10 years. Or the life of around five smartphones. If it comes to the UK, we'll let you know - and see you in the queue at B&Q.
