Voice calls coming to all Google Hangouts apps

Google desperately wants you to use its Hangouts service for all your mobile communication and with that in mind, looks set to bring in free voice calling to really sweeten the deal.

That's according to 9 to 5 Google, which claims Google is having something of a rethink about how it offers voice calls. Its existing Voice app (which never actually launched in the UK) is set to be closed down, with the voice calling functionality being added to Hangouts.

That effectively sets up Hangouts as a Skype competitor on both Android and iOS platforms, especially with instant messaging, picture sharing and video chat already present in the app.

Whether the phone networks will be happy about it is another thing. Networks haven't been wild about VoIP services in the past and this move is unlikely to get a warmer welcome than those in the past.

But it sounds like Google is moving in that direction regardless, with a launch of the all-new app expected in a few months' time. Here's hoping we get the full service in the UK when it does land.
