27 March launch rumoured for Microsoft Office for iPad

We heard that a launch was coming sooner than expected, but we didn't expect Microsoft to deliver Office for iPad as soon as 27 March.

That's the date being talked about for a Microsoft event that is expected to showcase both the company's 'mobile first cloud first' strategy and show off its new tablet software.

The app is said to be similar to the iPhone version of Office and will require an Office 365 subscription if you plan to use it for document editing – we are guessing you will. It will offer document creation and editing for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Pretty much as you expected really.

In addition to the unveiling of the Office app for iPad, new CEO Satya Nadella will also use his first conference for some pre-announcements ahead of the Build developer conference in April. So we might get some nuggets on Windows Phone 8.1, which is likely to be announced on 2 April at the Build event.

Obviously we should get availability dates and a price on that date for the new Office app too. Can't imagine there being much of a wait for the app. In fact, we would expect it to be in the app store that very day.
