HTC tipped to build new Nexus tablet

Don't really associate HTC with tablets, even if they have dabbled in that market in the past. But Google seems to trust them to build a new Nexus tablet this year.

That's according to a report in the Commercial Times and reprinted in turn by Focus Taiwan. That report claims HTC is returning to the tablet sector to build a 'new' Nexus tablet for Google, which will begin shipping in the third quarter of 2014. That's around the time that the Nexus 7 tends to get an upgrade, but there's no suggestion here that HTC has picked up that particular contract.

All we know about the new model is that it is 'high-end', which doesn't tell us a great deal. We had previously heard that Google is planning a Nexus 8 tablet, which was said to be a premium device, allowing the company to move away from the budget market or perhaps reposition the Nexus 7 for that sector.

However, that initial report did mention Asus as a potential partner. Maybe Google has changed its mind? It would be an interesting move to go for HTC, which doesn't have the strongest track record when it comes to tablets. Indeed, we haven't seen anything here since the HTC Flyer back in 2011.

HTC is refusing to comment on the story and right now, there isn't much else to back it up. But with the tablet said to be launching in months, we should have some kind of confirmation, unofficial or otherwise, well before that launch date.
