Samsung Galaxy S5 could launch on 23 February

The name Eldar Murtazin might not mean much to you, but it's a name that has graced these pages on various occasions. The mobile tech blogger certainly has sources and tends to get the scoop on some big launches. So if he's pitching an exact date for the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S5, we're paying attention.

His tweet read: 'Samsung Galaxy S5 launch - 18.00. Barcelona. 23 February. Price the same. Launch - end of April. Specs - u know them :) new touchwiz ;)'

Quite a lot there to get our heads round. But let's break it down. It seems that the MWC event will see the launch of the next Samsung flagship smartphone, specifically on the Sunday evening. Some late working required if that's true.

It is said to be priced as the S4 (so around £600 or so SIM-free) and will be in the shelves before April is out. As for knowing the specs, we did a piece on that yesterday. it is certainly taking shape, but there is still some debate as to whether Samsung will go with the iris sensor or a more sophisticated version of a fingerprint sensor.

That's the crucial point here, aside from whether construction will be plastic, metal or both. The likes of a 5.25-inch 2K QHD display and a 20-megapixel rear camera with OIS functionality and 4K video recording sound about right, as does the option of a Exynos 6 or a Snapdragon 805 chip (depending on whether you have a 4G model or not) and of course, Android 4.4 KitKat.

But Eldar Murtazin does throw in one last point, an all-new version of Samsung's TouchWiz interface. Not much has been heard on that front prior to this leak, but we wold expect a screengrab or two to materialise before the launch.

If it's true, we're just a month away from one of the biggest phone launches this year. Exciting times.
