Sony Xperia E1 smartphone makes its official debut

Big speaker on a phone? We know where that is being marketed. In fact, that's pretty much the stand out feature of the Sony Xperia E1.

Sony, it seems, wasn't done with us at CES. Oh no, it has a few more mobile bits and pieces ready and waiting, including this particular smartphone. It's a fairly middle of the range handset made for music, loud music. In fact, it packs a 100dB speaker and 30 days free access to the Sony Entertainment Network.

So free music and a speaker that should drown out all competition on the bus or train in the morning. It also has the Sony Walkman functionality and a dedicated music button, along with a shake to shuffle feature.

So music covered. The rest of the features really just make up the numbers.  That includes a 4-inch WVGA display with 800 x 480 resolution, Qualcomm MSM8210 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB storage. Presumably a camera too, but this hasn't been listed in the initial specification. Make your own judgement on that. No 4G either, in case you are wondering.

The Sony Xperia E1 handset will be offered in white, black and purple, selling SIM-free for €175 (or the UK equivalent). No news of a definite UK date just yet.
