LG signs deal to pre-install BBM on new phones

Once upon a time, in fact just a matter of months ago, there was only one way to get BBM pre-installed on your phone. That involved buying a BlackBerry device. But times have changed, with the messaging app pretty much everywhere.

In fact, if you buy an LG phone in the coming months, you'll be hard pushed to avoid it. The rollout of BlackBerry Messenger to Android and iOS phones has been a huge success (over 10 million downloads in the first 24 hours). So much so that LG has worked a deal to get it pre-installed on new models, kicking off with the LG G Pro Lite pictured here.

'People across the globe are using BBM to connect with each other and the enthusiasm has been phenomenal,' BlackBerry Executive Vice President for BBM Andrew Bocking said in the announcement.

We don't know what BB pre-loaded will actually entail, but it sounds like more than the app simply being there when you turn it on. The company is talking about 'an optimised BBM experience'. Make of that what you will - or wait until the hardware lands for a fairy assessment. With BBM voice and video calling promised for the app, perhaps we will see that in the pre-loaded version first?

When we find out, we'll let you know.
