Iris scanner likely to feature in upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5

We knew Samsung was looking to up its game after the relative commercial disappointment of the Samsung Galaxy S4. But we didn't quite expect it to head into the realms of sci-fi.

Ok, we might be overplaying that a little, but according to ZDNet Korea, the next Galaxy flagship will have an iris scanner to access your smartphone. Yes, a scan of your eye as a security measure before accessing your phone. Suddenly, a fingerprint scanner seems a little 'old hat'.

On top of that, the phone will allegedly pack a QHD screen with 2560 X 1440 resolution. Again, your humble HD screen suddenly looks a little tired in comparison. Launch date? That's being talked about as the MWC event in Barcelona in February 2014. Or at least, around that time. Samsung has a habit of doing its launches slightly away from the main trade shows.

As for the rest of the features, well speculation is starting to point to Samsung's new 64-bit eight-core Exynos processor, 3GB RAM and Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, although Samsung's own Tizen OS could also be offered in some territories.

Impressive on paper (or computer screen). Here's hoping the finished product lives up to the hype.
