Tesco confirms Hudl 2 planned

Know someone with a Hudl? I do and chance are you do too. In fact, demand and sales have been so strong, Tesco is already planning a second-generation Hudl for 2014.

We loved it when we got our hands on it and it seems others are loving it too. According to Tesco’s chief executive, Philip Clarke, 35,000 Hudl tablets sold in the first few days of launch, with more than 300,000 sold since. According to Mr Clarke, that is 'more than we had originally planned in total in the run-up to Christmas'.

He added that a new version of the Hudl is already on the drawing board: 'The new model will be an enhanced version' was all we got though. perhaps final details haven't quite been written off just yet?

Chief digital officer at Tesco, Michael Comish, added that Tesco had struggled to maintain stock: 'They are flying off the shelves so quickly, it has run out of stock twice.'

Ben Wood, mobile analyst with research firm CCS , claims the Hudl could well be more than just a tablet too: 'Our expectation is that the Hudl tablet could be a beachhead for a wider expansion into own-branded consumer electronics given the strong sales it has already recorded,' he said.

'Tesco will be acutely aware that Amazon is using its Kindle Fire tablets as a direct means to deepen its relationship with its customers. Tesco must address this quickly and develop Hudl into a direct channel that links into its numerous other assets such as the Clubcard and Blinkbox.'

He might have a point. Would you buy a supermarket own-brand smartphone for a knock-down price if it did what you wanted? We would have had our doubts six months ago, but now the idea of something like a Hudl smartphone doesn't seem so far-fetched.
