Apple to hold iPad event on 22 October

When a site that got the iPhone launch date right comes out with an iPad event date, we're thinking it's probably true. So with that in mind, make a note in your diary for Tuesday 22 October if you have an interest in the new iPads.

That's what AllThingsD is saying, citing 'people familiar with Apple's plans'. The event will be invite-only, with the iPads being the headline act, but with other products also showcased, including the new Mac Pro and the OS X Mavericks operating system for computers.

The fifth-generation iPad is expected to feature a thinner, lighter design, rather like the current iPad mini, as well as using an improved camera and Apple’s new 64-bit A7 chip. The second-generation iPad mini should be upgraded with a retina display and again use the A7 chip. There's a chance that both could have a Touch ID fingerprint sensor like the recent iPhones, but that's purely speculation.

With both Nokia and Microsoft holding events that day, it could be a real battle for headlines. Don't worry, we'll be on top of them all.
