Microsoft to unveil new Surface tablets on 23 September

Not sure if the first incarnation created the kind of ripples in the market that Microsoft would have hoped for. Mmaybe second-generation Surface tablets will do better?

Microsoft has just called a press event for 23 September in New York, which is likely to be a showcase for the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets. On the face of it, that's all we know really, with Microsoft not giving much more away on the invite.

But leaks have been sneaking out about the new hardware, with two sites offering just a little more detail on the upcoming launches. Neowin and WinSuperSite claim this is a refresh of the current tablet, using Windows RT 8.1 (although the RT is likely to be dropped) and with Nvidia's Tegra 4 processor, a 1080p display, 4GB RAM and a similar form factor. But there will be an 'integrated two-position kickstand' and a white colour option, presumably alongside the black pictured on the invite.

Mid-October is said to be the shelf date, coinciding with the launch of Windows 8.1.
