Leaked iPhone 5S packaging hints at fingerprint scanner

Not long now until the official launch of the new iPhone. In fact, it's just hours away, with events taking place on 10 September. Still time for a good leak though, like this one in fact.

There has long been talk of a fingerprint scanner on the new iPhone, with talk of that scanner being built into the home button, with previous murmurs pointing to a silver ring around the 'home' button, which shows the new technology is built into it..

The images here, via Apple Insider and iPhone in Canada, show some alleged packaging for the new iPhone which does indeed show that silver ring. It could be faked image, but if it is, someone has gone to a lot of effort to do just that.

If it is true, it is quite a shrewd move from Apple, with the new phone distinguishing itself easily from older models, thanks to the silver ring / scanner. That should be enough to get the fashionistas upgrading.

The idea of a fingerprint scanner has been hanging over the phone for months, but little in the way of leaked hardware has confirmed its presence in the new handset. However, there is reference to a 'Biometric Kit' in the beta version of iOS 7, which points to the sensor arriving sooner or later.

It now looks like it will be sooner, a key selling point in Apple's latest mobile hardware. Confirmation tomorrow, we hope.
