Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch is a chunky metal mother that hooks up to your Galaxy smartphone, much like Sony's SmartWatch 2, and gives you a variety of features such as a pedometer and a camera.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear doesn't hook up to non-Galaxy smartphones, like Sony's SmartWatch 2 will hook up to non-Xperias, so you'll need to be a Samsung fan. The 1.6-inch screen is crisp and colourful, and is housed in a very chunky metallic frame that properly juts out of your wrist when you're rocking it. We struggled to get it on ourselves, partly down to the fiddly strap and partly down to our general IFA fatigue - thankfully a fellow journalist helped us to get it on.
Although you can access various apps just like the Sony SmartWatch 2, without the hassle of yanking your phone out of your pocket, the Galaxy Gear also sports a mic and speaker so you can actually make and take calls. It also has a built-in camera on the wrist strap that takes ten seconds of video or as many shots as the 4GB storage will handle.
