Apple's budget phone likely to be the iPhone 5C

We've referred to it as the budget iPhone for as long as we've been talking about it. But it was never likely to be an official Apple name. If new rumours (and a photo) are to be believed, Apple's cut-price smartphone will be the iPhone 5C.

You can see the photo above, which is said to be a shot of the packaging used for the plastic variation of the iPhone. Why 'C'? No one is quite sure, but as there have been various shots of this model in a selection of colours, 'C' might be as simple as 'colour'. We'll only really find out once the phone has officially broken, likely to be in September alongside the new iPhone 5S.

That was pretty much guesswork until now, but a separate story effectively confirms that the phone is currently in production. A report by China Labour Watch, which sent undercover investigators into Apple supplier Pegatron's factory in China, let the cat out of the bag.

The report, which focuses on workers' pay, hours and working conditions, inadvertently confirms the budget iPhone. In one instance, it says: '(The factory’s) assembled products include iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, and low-priced plastic iPhones.'

Another diary entry for the report says: 'Today’s work is to paste protective film on the iPhone’s plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines. This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple.'

'The task is pretty easy, and I was able to work independently after a five-minute instruction from a veteran employee. It took around a minute to paste protective film on one rear cover. The new cell phone has not yet been put into mass production, so quantity is not as important. This makes our job more slow-paced than in departments that have begun mass production schedules.'

So it is almost certainly coming and likely to be called the iPhone 5C. Still no solid details on price, but with this being Apple, budget is likely to be a reduced price rather than a giveaway.
