Sony Xperia i1 launching this year, confirms Sony

Remember the Sony Xperia i1? It was caught on camera last month, but with precious little detail about it. We don't have much more now, although we do now have official confirmation.

The official nod has come from the CEO of Sony Korea, Kenji Sakai, who claims that the successor to the the Sony Xperia Z will be out on Korea before the end of the year. That phone being the Sony Xperia i1, also known in previous leaks as Honami.

It is likely to be Sony's attempt to get on the big camera bandwagon, with the one heavily rumoured feature so far being the 20-megapixel f/2.0 camera. Not just that, it is said to be the first in a new range of camera phones from the Japanese giant, coming into direction competition with the Nokia Lumia 1020 and the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom.

Sony has a press event scheduled for 4 September during the IFA event, with the Xperia i1 (or whatever name is finally settled on) likely to be the headline act. Expect more images and details ahead of that official launch.
