Google's second-generation Nexus 7 could launch this month

Apple might not be launching its iPad mini this year, but Google is definitely planning on getting a piece of the festive action with an updated tablet, namely the Google Nexus 7 II. In fact, it could be here before the month is out.

That's according to a report in Digitimes, which claims the new tablet, once again a co-production between Asus and Google, will be launched at the end of July or the start of August. Either way, that's not long to wait for the second-gen Nexus 7.

It's a report with a note of caution though. Digitimes claims that some retailers estimate as many as eight million new Nexus 7 tablets could be sold to a tablet-hungry market. However, 'supply chain' sources have issued a note of caution, claiming volume sales will be difficult due to the market being so competitive right now. The latter probably has a point, unless Google steps up its game.

It is doing that to some extent, with a new model said to feature a 7-inch 1980 by 1200 display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, along with five-megapixel rear and 1.2-megapixel front cameras. But it will also need to keep the price keen to. After all, the big sales last time out were down to a perception of this being the affordable tablet.

The report talks about a price between S$199 - $249 in the US for the Wi-Fi model, which sounds pretty reasonable. The entry model in the UK is currently around £160. If Google keeps to that, the new tablet should do pretty well in the run-up to Christmas. Especially if there's no iPad mini to bother it.
