No iPad mini 2 until 2014, claims report

We had heard a rumour that the iPad mini might sneak out early, possibly at the same time as the new iPhone. But a news report out of Taiwan throws cold water over that idea, claiming Apple's mini tablet is strictly 2014.

The publication in question is the usually accurate Economic Daily News in Taiwan, which claims Apple was indeed looking to launch the new mini in the third quarter of 2013, with an eye on the festival season to bump up sales. However, it has apparently encountered a shortage of Retina display panels, which means mass production of a 7.9-inch Retina tablet just now is out of the question.

The launch is now said to be set for an undisclosed time in 2014, although we would guess early in that year. When it does launch, Apple is said to be offering a range rather than a single model, with both Retina and non-Retina iPad minis on offer.

No one is quite clear just what else Apple is planning for its smaller tablet, but speculation points to a faster processor and possibly no bezel on the finished design. Still plenty of time for Apple to change it's mind though if 2014 is the shelf date.
