Apple's iPad 5 should land in September

When it comes to rumours, the Digitimes has plenty of them out of the far east, even if a good number turn out to be idle speculation. This latest story about upcoming iPad launches does have a ring of truth about it though.

According to the report, Apple will announce its fifth-generation 9.7-inch iPad in September as scheduled, but its next-generation iPad mini is still in the testing stages, with Apple reportedly pondering further upgrades in specifications, according to sources involved in the supply chain.

No such changes planned for the 9.7-inch iPad though, which is said to feature a Retina Display, a slimmer bezel design to allow a bigger viewing area and improved battery life, which is likely to be greeted with a loud cheer from everyone.

'Pilot production' is already said to be able to 'satisfy demand' for the initial launch, with the shipment estimates for that stock down for at the end of July or early August. In short, if you order early, you should have one not long after the unveiling.

As for the new 7.9-inch iPad mini, Apple is still pondering a Retina Display for the device. If it goes for one, shipping will be delayed until well into the fourth quarter. Apple is also looking to further shrink the iPad mini's bezel, aiming for a 'bezel-less design' similar to that of the larger-sized smartphones.

Again, that could add time onto production, but we're still expecting it to be here for the festive season.
