Sony launches thinnest HD phablet smartphone

Sony launched the Xperia Z Ultra ‘phablet’, “the world’s slimmest and largest Full HD smartphone”, at a global event this morning. This 6.4-inch Full HD smartphone is incredibly thin at just 6.5mm, yet packs a quad-core processor and is fully waterproof and dust resistant.

The Xperia Z Ultra’s 6.4-inch Triluminous display, backed up by Sony’s Reality screen technology, should be the best possible way to enjoy an HD movie on a mobile. The 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution is something usually only seen on the very best tablets, and given the Sony Xperia Z’s beautiful screen we can’t wait to spend some time with this display.

One of the Samsung Galaxy Note’s best features is the excellent S Pen stylus, which allows creative users to go to town on the spacious screen. Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra doesn’t come with a stylus, but intriguingly allow you to sketch on the scratch-resistant display with any standard pencil. We’re not sure how effective this will be but we’re looking forward to testing it out.

While the Xperia Z Ultra is a hefty beast at 212g – making it even heavier than Nokia’s Lumia 920 – it’s also mind-bogglingly thin at just 6.5mm. Don’t worry if you’re a bit clumsy, because the durable body can survive a trip into the toilet or a session in the bath. It’s IPX5/8 water and dust resistant, thanks to the sealed ports and solid design. Even the 3.5mm jack is waterproof.

A 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor is one of the nippiest we’ve seen in a smartphone to date, and should easily cope with gaming and multimedia well into the foreseeable future. A 3000mAh battery – designed to be impressively slim to fit inside the slender body – shuld hopefully keep you going all day.

On the back of the Xperia Z Ultra you’ll find an eight megapixel camera which rocks Sony’s Superior Auto mode, meaning it should take brilliant photos no matter what the external conditions and without any manual fiddling of settings. You can also record 1080p HD video and a front-facing 2MP lens can be used for portrait shots.

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra will be hitting UK stores in Q3 2013, and comes in black, white and purple. Customers will also get a £21 voucher to spend on Sony’s Entertainment network, on movies, music and games, and will get 30 free days of Music Unlimited.
