Samsung’s Ativ Tab 3 is the world’s thinnest Windows 8 tablet at 8.2mm, and like the Samsung Ativ Q it also boasts the excellent S Pen stylus for getting creative on the go.
The slender frame weighs 550g which is comparable to Apple’s iPad, although the Ativ Tab 3 isn’t anywhere near as chunky as Apple’s tablet. It certainly isn’t a light device, and we can tell our arm would ache if we clutched it one-handed for the length of our commute, but at least you can easily slip it into a bag or case to carry around. While the 8.2mm thickness is eclipsed by the incredible slender design of the Sony Xperia Tablet Z (6.9mm), it’s still an impressively thin build finished off with an attractive while-and-silver finish.
The Ativ Tab 3’s 10.1-inch screen packs a 1366 x 768 resolution, which is standard for a tablet this size. We had a brief play and it’s typically strong for a Samsung display, with great viewing angles and enough power to counter harsh lighting. A micro HDMI slot also allows you to hook up to a TV, if you want to share movies, apps and so on with the rest of the family.
S Note 2.0, the updated version of Samsung’s stylus software, comes pre-installed on the Ativ Tab 3 so you can get the most of the handy S Pen (which slips into a corner slot so you don’t lose it when not in use). You also get a free copy of Office, which gives you a great range of productivity software – great news if you need to keep working on the train home.
An Intel Atom processor runs the show, backed up by 2GB of RAM. A mighty 64GB of storage allows you to install tons of apps or carry lots of music and movies around, and you also get a Micro SD memory card slot for expansion.
