BlackBerry Q5 gets a UK price

Maybe we were being a little naive, but when the BlackBerry Q5 appeared, we presumed it would be one of the company's budget offerings, making inroads in a sector where BlackBerry still has a strong presence.

Indeed, BlackBerry's main man in the UK added that the phone could be a £20 contract phone, subsequently adding to the expectation that the BlackBerry Q5 could make a mass market splash. The SIM-free price doesn't bear that out.

Granted, this is only the first pricing being offered, but if the price being asked by Unlocked-Mobiles of £349.98 SIM-free is the norm, that idea of this being on a cheap contract might not be the reality. Ok, it might work out cheaper than the BlackBerry Q10 if you want a BlackBerry with the new OS and a QWERTY keyboard, but it doesn't look like it will be anywhere near budget.

Perhaps it shouldn't be. Hardware-wise, it isn't cutting edge, but with a 3.1-inch 720p display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 2GB RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a 2-megapixel front camera and 5-megapixel rear facing camera, it still has a lot to offer. Not least, that QWERTY, which always has appeal with BlackBerry's fanbase.

It's down as being in stock from 15 July, which is likely to be when the contract deals appear too. When we get a sniff of those, we'll let you know.
